Reviewing the border (again)

I’m still thinking about that ‘white’ border at the bottom of the garden. I know in my heart that a white border isn’t going to look right there, or even last for more than a year or so before we start diluting it with plants that we just have to find a home for, somewhere. But on the other hand, I have always wanted a single colour border, more than anything else.

So …here’s the new plan.

Instead of a white border I’m going to have an edible garden. That combines the two ideas I’d had before, of rebuilding the border completely (which is necessary) with the idea of a border around a single theme (just not a colour). I shall use something a bit like the square foot gardening approach, so that I don’t get problems with crop rotation.

And I’m going to have a series of pots on one side of the terrace that will be colour themed – white for summer, purple for winter. So it will mean planting up one set of pots while the others are in full bloom and swapping them over.

I think it sounds a bit more manageable. Sometimes dreams have to be cut down to size if they are to fit into my garden!

Garden Photo – June

So here it is. You can see the grapevine starting to scramble over the shed roof – by September it will have covered the shed and its bitter little black grapes will be attracting (and then repelling) all the birds for miles around. I wonder how long it takes for them to learn that it’s a wine vine not a dessert vine?

The oriental poppies are making a bright splash of colour on the left of the picture and behind them is the orange-berried cotoneaster in full white blossom. Those two empty beds are filling up nicely although I am disappointed not to have germinated any of those gorgeous green rudbeckia that I’d set my heart on.

Sitting on the terrace is a courgette that a neighbour gave me which was waiting to be taken to the allotment to be planted out and the sage in the tub is in full purple flower: the bees absolutely adore it!

So, just one downside - comparing this picture to the one taken in April, I really don’t think that the lawn is any better!
